Don't ask me WHY? (also info on...God Box and Pennies from Heaven)

...I've been so motivated and inspired lately.  or as my Prissypal put it "Stella's Got Her Groove Back" WHAT?  But I won't question it... just go with the FLOW.  Woohoo.  Recently, I read this article in "Real Simple" about a God Box and I thought I'd make one too.  It's a perfect time of year to start new things.  I took an empty used box left over from Christmas gifts... this one was a chocolate brown so I loved the base color to begin with.  Then I printed out a pretty (and appropriate) saying on 8x11 printer paper.  I aged it by singeing the edges with a match (blowing it out immediately so the entire sheet doesn't burn up, this can be tricky in a hyperventilating manner) and then I affixed it to the box top with double-sticky tape.  I also made a loop with ribbon for a knob.  I just punctured a hole into the center of the box top, made a loop with the ribbon and tide it on the inside of the lid to keep it in place.

Below is a picture of the box top using a favorite verse (I have many) from the bible of mine.  I don't know about you but bible verses always bring me a sense of peace and comfort.  I thought this verse was especially appropriate for use with my "God box".  Lawsy knows I have plenty of crooked paths that need straightnin' Ya'll.

I also finished my "Pennies From Heaven" journal.  I'll post pictures more on that later. I am going to use it for my gratitude journal this year.  This is a journal class that is taught by Debby Schuh over at the Memory Bee blog?  You can read what the Pennies from Heaven journal means to her over at the Memory Bee  <---- click and where it originated.  Just love that.

Happy Earth Day! ReUSE, Reduce, Recycle! My DH is a Genius- Yay Yay Yay, the Futon Revisited

Originally Posted December 2007 but in honor of Earth Day I thought I would bump this up.  Try using new eyes to see things differently before you throw things away and fill up the landfills even more.  This was a simple wood futon destined for the trash heap.  As we were getting ready to load it up for the dumpster, I stopped my dh and look what we have instead?  An awesome shelf system just the perfect size for my favorite hobby stamping and paper crafts.  Thanks everyone and please enjoy this repost...

I am soooo excited I don't know what to do. This has been the bestest Christmas EVER that I have had in a long long time. I know I am a total dork because I am happy happy (did I say happy) over shelves. First I got my library shelves for the living room for Christmas, so unexpected and wonderful. Then, as if that weren't enough I got 4 count them 4 new CUSTOM made shelving units for (you'll never guess) STAMPERS. Remember the "guess what this is going to be" post? Well they are finished and attached to my wall!! Here are the before and after pictures:

We recycled an old futon that we were going to just ship off to either goodwill or the trash. We have been cleaning the garage and I got to looking at the futon with my stampers eye. You know if it can be used for stamping or embellished or glittered we always have to keep our eye out for these things. So my genius DH figured out what to do to and did it for me right away. All we did was get some 1x2's, cut the 2 long pieces of the futon (the seat and the back) in half, added ends, nailed the 1x2 shelves to the existing slats of the futon (the stamps are sitting on the added new 1x2 pieces), cleaned them up and walla WE'VE GOT THE CUSTOM SHELVES OF THE CENTURY and we did it by re-purposing a found object. Which to me makes them even more special because they didn't cost me anything and we saved a tree or two. I wanted to take a picture with them empty so you can see the shelves better. I will take more pics when I have them all filled up (that shouldn't take me too long hahaha). Aren't they great? Now off to do more organizing...I get that way this time of year....I told ya'. skipping off whistling happy tunes..no whining even...

Superdaughter? It was a beautiful evening for flying (www.flytorrey.com) <---click - for some CRAZY PEOPLE. I took these with a point and shoot but it's times like these I wish I had lots of zoom. There were 10 balloons in all up tonight. I love hot-air balloons but you wouldn't catch me dead in one of them. They are pretty however. Warning!! Lot's of pictures... but I like pictures, don't you?

They went up and down the coast. It was beautiful and the wind was cooperating. The pilot said that sunset flights are very rare. Usually they only get 10 days a year where sunset flights are a-go. The winds are usually not strong enough after sunset. Best flying times are from noon-3:00. He said she was LUCKY.

Bargain Shopping

I thought I'd share a couple of the places that I go to order bulk buys at super great prices on "All Things Pr!ssy". (I am not receiving any compensation for either of these plugs, just sayin' EDIT... I just like to share great deals...) I just re-ordered some TOMBO Mono Adhesive Refills from an online place called Penwa. I ordered the Qty 6 refills and even with shipping it averaged to only about $2.00 per unit (+ or - a few pennies). That is approx. half what you would normally pay for retail. I love a deal like that. Another place that I lerve to buy "bulk" from is Pink HedgeHog Paper Crafts. I have purchased a lot (almost all) of my ribbon from here. I got some of each of the following: polka dot organdy, narrow stitched, ricrac, solid grosgrain, narrow organdy and ginham... just to name a few. She has tons more... these are just the ones I purchased. Her ribbon averages about .25 to .30 cents a yard. (but check her website for specific prices and Qty's) ....which is about what I think you should pay for ribbon. I think Pink HedgeHogs products are the most reasonably priced that I have found. TIP OF THE WEEK: Even Michael's ribbon in the dollar bin if you look at the yardage on the spool you are paying approximately $1.00 a yard or more. You think you are getting a deal because it is in the dollar bin but in reality its not the best price so check those yardages and prices. I will on occasion purchase ribbon that is more than .30 cents a yard if I really really really like it or need it. But for the bulk ribbon I try to keep it under .30 cents a yard. Especially if you are like me and h2h some in every color, size and shape. So if you are just getting into PaperCrafts and would like to stock up... these are great resources to do so. I got really great service over there and she has always been very easy to work with and shipment was prompt and as expected (she even sticks a little sumpin' extra in usually) I also purchased all of my eyelets and brads from her too, ANOTHER great buy if you are in the market for those so go check it out.

Hoppy Surprise

While I was out walking my dog yesterday I was so surprised to walk up upon the city sponsored Easter Egg Hunt in the park. I was so surprised I snapped a quick picture of the 1000s of eggs all over the place. It made me smile. You'll have to click on the photo to enlarge to get more details. I took this pic with my camera phone so no zooming or lighting adjustments. I think you can see just how many little plastic eggs were all over the place. I thought it was so sweet for the kids that were going to be coming to play. It was early and the Easter Bunny (err the adults) were the only ones there setting up the place. It just made me really happy to see all of the effort everyone was making for the kids. Yep that's a park right near my house the mountains you see in the back shot literally butt up to my back yard. As you can see the weather is awesome as usually in So. Cali. I am from the upper midwest so this year round climate weather is a real treat for me considering where I was from had a record 107 inches this year and has snowed everyday since Nov. 30 hahahaha.

Colored Eggs

Coloring Easter eggs is a tradition in most families. And brings fond memories for all I am sure. My kids are grown adults now so not much Easter egg coloring going on around here anymore. Well last night I came up with an easypeasy NO MESS way of making sure there were colored eggs on my table. Ya gotta check these out. Hey brown is a color. I'm a genius I tell 'ya. ~enjoy.

OMG 13 days since my last blog post

I still have nothing to report. I have had a headache for 2 days now. My lovely mother is visiting and I think the holiday let down and being back to work after a 2 week vacation has just put a screeching halt on my creating and art flow. I am very upset about this. I am finding the stop and start... stop and start very hard when it comes to creating. I lose my momentum and my mojo. I took my mom to my LSS today and she really enjoyed it. She was attracted to an altered book sample they had on the counter for an upcoming class. Here's one of the pics:

It made me happy that she showed an interest because she doesn't do anything arty and I have been trying to suggest she do some scrap booking. But she didn't "get it"... When she saw the altered book (I had been trying to explain mixed media to her) she got it. Art has brought so much to my life I just think it would be an excellent pastime for her. I would love for her to enjoy it too. I think I saw a tiny aha moment in my mother's eyes today so I'm excited about this. Anyway, back to me whining.... OH we also went to Barnes and Nobel and I found THIS. OMG maybe we should table the whining for a minute. I picked up Betz White's new book called "Warm Fuzzies" I have never done any felting but I love the look. Hehe but I just h2h it.

I guess I did have something to post after all. I'm so moody. Geesh. This reminded me I also bought my mother a couple of Somerset magazines and I picked up the new Papercraft magazine. What am I moaning about? I think I will go read my new stuff. Hey I said I had a headache I'm not thinking so straight today. Hopefully I'll create soon. Thanks for listening.

Focus

I think I figured out my one word for 2008. I have decided upon the word F O C U S. Why? Well because I need to focus on more than one thing so I wanted my one word to remind me of more than one thing. I think the word focus accomplishes this for me.

I think I will try it on for size and see if I like it. I'm still partial to "S I M P L I F Y" and after seeing this post on Ali's blog... I even thought it was a sign that I should keep my word "S I M P L I F Y" another year. But I think it's boring having the same word for 5 years. Dare I say... even a little too simple? hehe Ok stay focused.... focus it is (for now)

Re-Purposing

Just wanted to post an update as promised with my newly re-purposed futon shelves all loaded up with my stamps. Ok so it's an honest obsession at least.

Left panel... I put all of my Valentine sets together (all SU) for inspiration. This section will probably be a seasonal section that I will swap out by holiday as needed. I also keep my background stamps here....the far far left panel is empty is a dead space that is hard to reach we will probably move it and put it to the right side instead so I can reach, it will be behind a door but that's ok. Right now it goes unused. =(

Here's wishing everyone a very happy, healthy and blessed New Year. Here is a pic of my first attempt at altering a birthday reminder rolodex.

I've been meaning to do one of these. I am going to make a divider card for each month (I only have January's finished right now, appropriately) and then have a mini-scrap/collage/ATCish page for each person on their birthdate including a picture of each person(if I have one). I've used a mix of supplies, the image of the hourglass is cutout from a Crafty Secrets (link in right column of my blog) booklet, the calendar printout is a free template that you can also find at Crafty Secret's website. The paper is from one of those powerpacks (you know one of those 10 zillion page bargain packs) I got a while back from a warehouse store. The ribbon I snagged from a bulk buy from pink hedgehog and I finally used my new mini-sew. I am such a clutz when it comes to sewing. Don't ask me how I got the thread twisted and knotted on the needle so bad I had to start over without even a first stitch made and that always happens to me when I sew. I don't get it? How can someone be sew (intended) clumsy around a sewing machine. I'm just all thumbs when it comes to a sewing machine. Don't get me wrong. I'm no amateur... I'm not an expert either but I have made many many items. But now I know why I don't sew much because every time I get around one I spend more time untying and unraveling knots than I do sewing. Does this happen to anyone else?

Martha?

I don't know why I read things that depress me and Martha surely doesn't NEED any press but did you know freakin Martha has a blog NOW?? Maybe I am in the dark ages and everyone already knew this and it's no news flash to anyone but me (ok she is now in my reader I'm a glutton for punishment). But check out her HOLIDAY PARTY. OMG. Martha and I have always had a love hate relationship.... I love her but hate her all at the same time. My favorite picture is below... where her guests are in her library...oh heck...that's probably just a hallway...I am sure her REAL library is bigger than congress. If you click on the pic it will take you to the post on Martha's blog. Don't they all look so happy? Clones.

I just assembled my own library wall so I was kinda of impressed with myself. It doesn't of course measure up to MARTHA but hey kindredspiritish for sure. A picture of my "library" (ok IKEA, secrets out..I'm sure Martha's onsite carpenter MADE hers from trees felled on her property) coughcough follows... my DH got for my Christmas present and had it all assembled and stocked by Christmas Eve day. I love it and was soooo happy... I've been wanting libraryesc shelves like forever. It's really beautiful and fit all of my things perfectly. I actually wouldn't mind have one more unit to add to it. SIDENOTE: My DH is also building me a new stamp shelf. I can't wait until it's finished I will post it as soon as it is all done. He is re-purposing a wood futon frame for a mini stamp shelf. I think it will be quite ingenious and can't wait to show it. Back to the shelves. The pic doesn't show it but these are actually 4 wide you can only see three of them. It's 2 double-wide units to total a look of 4. I would have linked to it at IKEA but it is a new item at the store and it wasn't on the web yet. Be it ever so humble....

A Timely Reminder~

This just came to my attention and was such a beautifully written and heartfelt piece I wanted to share it. It also has such a nice lesson for this time of year. ~Enjoy

The Wooden Bowl

I guarantee you will remember the tale of the Wooden Bowl
tomorrow, a week from now, a month from now, a year from now.

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and
four-year-old grandson.
The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.

The family ate together at the table, but the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult.
Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor.
When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess.
"We must do something about father," said the son.
"I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor."

So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner.
There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner.
Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone.
Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor.
He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded,
"Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up."
The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.

The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless.
Then tears started to stream down their cheeks.
Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.
For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason,
neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

On a positive note, I've learned that, no matter what happens,
how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.

I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles four things:
a rainy day, the elderly, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.

I've learned that, regardless of your relationship with your parents,
you'll miss them when they're gone from your life.

I've learned that making a "living" is not the same thing as making a "life.."

I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.

I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt on both hands.
You need to be able to throw something back.

I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you
But, if you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others,
your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you.

I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision.

I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one.

I've learned that every day, you should reach out and touch someone.

People love that human touch -- holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

Cards Cards Cards

I've decided to post a collage (click on the collage image to zoom in) of all of the cards I've sent out this year. There are just too many to post individually. But first a thought... Ya know I've noticed as I am sure everyone else has too that cards appear to be a fading tradition. I normally send approximately 40 +- cards each holiday season. I even feel this is a low number as I've known people that send out a hundred plus. But anyway for me that seems to be my rolodex. The past couple of years I have received approx. 12 cards give or take a few. It's not that I am "hinting" for more cards and I certainly don't give cards just to receive more cards back. I enjoy sending cards, ok I love sending cards out. I was just thinking how I send out cards faithfully every year even to those who don't return the cheer. Not only do I send them I MAKE them all individually by hand. A lot of thought goes into my cards obviously. So I guess it just hurts me a bit when I run to the mailbox during the holidays and there is a market mailer but no cards. I might as well have a lump of coal in there. Well you all know I like to whine so I guess I couldn't get through the holidays without at least one little bitty whine. OMG I just noticed it's 2 a.m. I got lost in my art studio once again!!! Yes, I was finishing up a few late cards (ok better late than NEVER). Believe it or not it IS still the holiday season and doesn't end until January 6th (Three kings day and also the 12th day of Christmas) So technically I am not late. Anyway, what's up with the fading tradition of exchanging cards? I know email and the internet has something to do with it but I think we should revolt.

Your stomach shouldn't be a waste basket

I think it is so funny that today's quote is Your Stomach Shouldn't be a Waste Basket after I just got over the stomach virus. See it's stalking me... Maybe it links up through keywords because it's too ironic that it keeps cycling topics that are 100% related to my recent posts? It's scary how much a computer "acts" like it's a real living breathing entity. I swear there really are aliens. Freaky. NEWay it appears from the evidence that it wasn't food poisoning although it acted like food poisoning because there were others at work that had the exact same thing I had and even did end up at urgent care. I tell ya it was that nasty. I thought for sure I would die. It lasts about 4 days. The doctor's said this was the stomach virus going around. I went back to work 1 day too early too because I was sure salty that first day back. I snapped at the first half dozen or so persons that even dared show their face in my pod that morning. It wadn't purty. The first guy that came in says sarcastically to me, "good morning sunshine" I leered back at him and said GET OUT just GET OUT OF MY POD. In my best linda blair voice ever? Then the next person asked me for help and when I tried to help this person she went into a weird female-ish insecure reaction and clammed up and didn't want my help but continued to try and waste my time so I cut the tutorial short and said in a VERY curt tone... you know where I sit, if you still want my help, come and get me...then I turned heal and walked out all while signing the peace out sign with my fingers (yes it really was peace out and not a bird symbol). OMG it didn't level out until 1ish in the afternoon. I should have just stayed home. But today I was 100% I cannot tell you how good that felt. I woke up this a.m. and it literally was night and day. So I spent the better part of today apologizing for my bad self yesterday. Even though I really had fun with it because I actually enjoy being a @#^$% now. I just do. I think it's a finely honed art form and acquired taste and skill and everybody loves it soooo much. It goes right along with my joy of whining. hehe ;D HEY it's my right as a woman of substance and I own it. The whole point to my post? I picked up a new tempurpedicish mattress pad (costco) and I can't wait to try it out. I wake up every morning just about in severe pain. I don't know what it is but it sure hurts a lot so I am going to give this a try and I am crossing my fingers I will get a good nights sleep tonight. I'll let you know. Maybe I should post something about winning the lottery? How's that for a key word. OH I might delete the post about evil doll because one of my prissy pals had a nightmare after reading my blog and she hates evil doll. I had to laugh. It sure has been a unfortunate week. Maybe she has a point. I'm deleting it now. doodoodoodoododoo insert twilight zone music here.

Other updates...

As long as I am at it. I am sure everyone is quite asleep right now and unsubscribing as we speak but I finally got my final mammogram report back from the clinic. I got a letter in the mail and it said that they would like to recheck in six months just to verify stability. I'm ok with that because that means that everything it ok right now and not to worry. I don't mind the follow-up because breast cancer is 100% curable if caught early. I like those odds and intend on assisting with keeping those on my side. So I will schedule another one dutifully in six months YAYAYAYAYAY. I am sooooo happy I heard good news.

~missprissme - now go on out there girls and get yours done if you haven't already done so - it's not scary at all and it doesn't hurt. Just go out in the garage, place breast on concrete and practice with the garage door (using the garage door opener). You'll be just fine. ROFL

Not only that she is a super compassionate and caring person. She offered me such kind words of support when I was freaking over my mammograms last month.
